Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a scholarship or stipend?
No. NVS support is not a scholarship, stipend, or cash award.
Funds are handled through:
- Direct payment to vendors (when possible), or
- Reimbursement for approved expenses with itemized receipts
Any unused funds remain with the NVS program to support future participants.
Do I need to have a trip fully confirmed before applying?
No. You may apply with tentative trip plans, as long as you can identify:
- A likely partner organization
- Expected village/location (if known)
- Approximate dates
Final support decisions may depend on confirmed logistics.
How are applicants selected?
Applications are reviewed using a structured rubric that considers:
- Commitment to service and access to care
- Cultural humility and community engagement
- Readiness for rural field conditions
- Clear goals and motivation
- Thoughtful plans for post鈥憈rip contribution
Selection also considers program logistics and cohort balance.
What expectations does NVS have of me?
We want you to have a meaningful experience to grow as a person and future veterinarian. We expect you to approach your trip with an eagerness to learn and participate. Bring a sense of respect, humility, and a positive attitude. Be ready to work closely with others in situations that may be challenging or outside of your comfort zone.
All NVS participants must complete one post鈥憈rip deliverable, chosen in consultation with Dr. Pietsch. Options may include:
- A brief presentation to the department and/or classmates
- A small service, outreach, communication, or educational project
This deliverable is intended to help participants give back to the program, partners, or department.
What if I鈥檓 not sure whether my trip or partner qualifies?
If you鈥檙e unsure whether a specific opportunity or veterinary partner is a good fit for NVS, you鈥檙e encouraged to reach out to Dr. Pietsch before applying.
